Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded, Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
“Can a man be of use to God? Can even a wise man benefit Him? “Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself. Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? “Can a strong man be of use to God, Or a wise one be useful to himself? “Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise person benefit him?
Does it delight the Almighty that you are righteous? Does He profit if your ways are blameless? Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are in the right, or is it gain to him if you make your ways blameless? Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect? “Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, Or gain if you make your ways blameless? What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous? What would he gain if your ways were blameless?
Is it for your reverence that He rebukes you and enters into judgment against you? Is it for your fear of him that he reproves you and enters into judgment with you? Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment? “Is it because of your reverence that He punishes you, That He enters into judgment against you? “Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you?
Is not your wickedness great? Are not your iniquities endless? Is not your evil abundant? There is no end to your iniquities. Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite? “Is your wickedness not abundant, And is there no end to your guilty deeds? Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins endless?
For you needlessly demanded security from your brothers and deprived the naked of their clothing. For you have exacted pledges of your brothers for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing. For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing. “For you have seized pledges from your brothers without cause, And stripped people naked. You demanded security from your relatives for no reason; you stripped people of their clothing, leaving them naked.
You gave no water to the weary and withheld food from the famished, You have given no water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. “You have given the weary no water to drink, And you have withheld bread from the hungry. You gave no water to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry,
while the land belonged to a mighty man, and a man of honor lived on it. The man with power possessed the land, and the favored man lived in it. But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. “But the earth belongs to the powerful man, And the one who is honorable dwells on it. though you were a powerful man, owning land— an honored man, living on it.
You sent widows away empty-handed, and the strength of the fatherless was crushed. You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless were crushed. Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. “You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of orphans has been crushed. And you sent widows away empty-handed and broke the strength of the fatherless.
Therefore snares surround you, and sudden peril terrifies you; Therefore snares are all around you, and sudden terror overwhelms you, Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee; “Therefore traps surround you, And sudden dread terrifies you, That is why snares are all around you, why sudden peril terrifies you,
it is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you. or darkness, so that you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you. Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee. Or darkness, so that you cannot see, And a flood of water covers you. why it is so dark you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you.
Is not God as high as the heavens? Look at the highest stars, how lofty they are! “Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how lofty they are! Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! “Is God not in the height of heaven? Look also at the highest stars, how high they are! “Is not God in the heights of heaven? And see how lofty are the highest stars!
Yet you say: ‘What does God know? Does He judge through thick darkness? But you say, ‘What does God know? Can he judge through the deep darkness? And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud? “But you say, ‘What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness? Yet you say, ‘What does God know? Does he judge through such darkness?
Thick clouds veil Him so He does not see us as He traverses the vault of heaven. Thick clouds veil him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the vault of heaven.’ Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven. ‘Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; And He walks on the vault of heaven.’ Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.’
Will you stay on the ancient path that wicked men have trod? Will you keep to the old way that wicked men have trod? Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? “Will you keep to the ancient path Which wicked people have walked, Will you keep to the old path that the wicked have trod?
They were snatched away before their time, and their foundations were swept away by a flood. They were snatched away before their time; their foundation was washed away. Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood: Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundations were washed away by a river? They were carried off before their time, their foundations washed away by a flood.
They said to God, ‘Depart from us. What can the Almighty do to us?’ They said to God, ‘Depart from us,’ and ‘What can the Almighty do to us?’ Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them? “They said to God, ‘Go away from us!’ And ‘What can the Almighty do to them?’ They said to God, ‘Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?’
But it was He who filled their houses with good things; so I stay far from the counsel of the wicked. Yet he filled their houses with good things— but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. “Yet He filled their houses with good things; But the advice of the wicked is far from me. Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things, so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.
The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent mock them: The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent one mocks at them, The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn. “The righteous see and are glad, And the innocent mock them, saying, The righteous see their ruin and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying,
‘Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire has consumed their excess.’ saying, ‘Surely our adversaries are cut off, and what they left the fire has consumed.’ Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth. ‘Truly our enemies are eliminated, And fire has consumed their abundance.’ Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire devours their wealth.’
Reconcile now and be at peace with Him; thereby good will come to you. “Agree with God, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you. Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. “Be reconciled with Him, and be at peace; Thereby good will come to you. “Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.
Receive instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart. Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. “Please receive instruction from His mouth, And put His words in your heart. Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart.
If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored. If you remove injustice from your tents If you return to the Almighty you will be built up; if you remove injustice far from your tents, If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles. “If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; If you remove injustice far from your tent, If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent
and consign your gold to the dust and the gold of Ophir to the stones of the ravines, if you lay gold in the dust, and gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrent-bed, Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. And put your gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks, and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,
then the Almighty will be your gold and the finest silver for you. then the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver. Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. Then the Almighty will be your gold And abundant silver to you. then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you.
Surely then you will delight in the Almighty and lift up your face to God. For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty and lift up your face to God. For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God. “For then you will take pleasure in the Almighty And lift up your face to God. Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God.
You will pray to Him, and He will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows. You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you, and you will pay your vows. Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. “You will pray to Him, and He will hear you; And you will pay your vows. You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.
Your decisions will be carried out, and light will shine on your ways. You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways. Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways. “You will also decide something, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways. What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways.
When men are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’ then He will save the lowly. For when they are humbled you say, ‘It is because of pride’; but he saves the lowly. When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. “When they have brought you low, you will speak with confidence, And He will save the humble person. When people are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’ then he will save the downcast.
He will deliver even one who is not innocent, rescuing him through the cleanness of your hands.” He delivers even the one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.” He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands. “He will rescue one who is not innocent, And he will be rescued due to the cleanness of your hands.” He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands.”
