1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said: Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? “Should a multitude of words go unanswered, and a man full of talk be judged right? “Are all these words to go unanswered? Is this talker to be vindicated?
3 Should thy boastings make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed? Should your babble silence men, and when you mock, shall no one shame you? Will your idle talk reduce others to silence? Will no one rebuke you when you mock?
4 For thou sayest, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes. For you say, ‘My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in God’s eyes.’ You say to God, ‘My beliefs are flawless and I am pure in your sight.’
5 But Oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee; But oh, that God would speak and open his lips to you, Oh, how I wish that God would speak, that he would open his lips against you
6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that iris manifold in effectual working! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth. and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom! For he is manifold in understanding. Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves. and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.
7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
8 It is high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than Sheol; what canst thou know? It is higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know? They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know?
9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea. Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.
10 If he pass through, and shut up, and call unto judgment, then who can hinder him? If he passes through and imprisons and summons the court, who can turn him back? “If he comes along and confines you in prison and convenes a court, who can oppose him?
11 For he knoweth vain men: he seeth iniquity also, even though he consider it not. For he knows worthless men; when he sees iniquity, will he not consider it? Surely he recognizes deceivers; and when he sees evil, does he not take note?
12 But vain man is void of understanding, yea, man is born as a wild ass's colt. But a stupid man will get understanding when a wild donkey’s colt is born a man! But the witless can no more become wise than a wild donkey’s colt can be born human.
13 If thou set thine heart aright, and stretch out thine hands toward him; “If you prepare your heart, you will stretch out your hands toward him. “Yet if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him,
14 If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not unrighteousness dwell in thy tents; If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let not injustice dwell in your tents. if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent,
15 Surely then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear: Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish; you will be secure and will not fear. then, free of fault, you will lift up your face; you will stand firm and without fear.
16 For thou shalt forget thy misery; thou shalt remember it as waters that are passed away: You will forget your misery; you will remember it as waters that have passed away. You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by.
17 And thy life shall be clearer than the noonday; though there be darkness, it shall be as the morning. And your life will be brighter than the noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like morning.
18 And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt search about thee, and shalt take thy rest in safety. And you will feel secure, because there is hope; you will look around and take your rest in security. You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety.
19 Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee. You will lie down, and none will make you afraid; many will court your favor. You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid, and many will court your favor.
20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall have no way to flee, and their hope shall be the giving up of the ghost. But the eyes of the wicked will fail; all way of escape will be lost to them, and their hope is to breathe their last.” But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; their hope will become a dying gasp.”
