1 Then Zophar the Naamathite replied: Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said: Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, Then Zophar the Naamathite responded, Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
2 “Should this stream of words go unanswered and such a speaker be vindicated? “Should a multitude of words go unanswered, and a man full of talk be judged right? Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? “Shall a multitude of words go unanswered, And a talkative man be acquitted? “Are all these words to go unanswered? Is this talker to be vindicated?
3 Should your babbling put others to silence? Will you scoff without rebuke? Should your babble silence men, and when you mock, shall no one shame you? Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed? “Shall your boasts silence people? And will you scoff, and no one rebuke? Will your idle talk reduce others to silence? Will no one rebuke you when you mock?
4 You have said, ‘My doctrine is sound, and I am pure in Your sight.’ For you say, ‘My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in God’s eyes.’ For thou hast said, My doctrine <i>is</i> pure, and I am clean in thine eyes. “For you have said, ‘My teaching is pure, And I am innocent in your eyes.’ You say to God, ‘My beliefs are flawless and I am pure in your sight.’
5 But if only God would speak and open His lips against you, But oh, that God would speak and open his lips to you, But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee; “But if only God would speak, And open His lips against you, Oh, how I wish that God would speak, that he would open his lips against you
6 and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God exacts from you less than your iniquity deserves. and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom! For he is manifold in understanding. Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves. And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that <i>they are</i> double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee <i>less</i> than thine iniquity <i>deserveth</i>. And show you the secrets of wisdom! For sound wisdom has two sides. Know then that God forgets part of your guilt. and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know this: God has even forgotten some of your sin.
7 Can you fathom the deep things of God or discover the limits of the Almighty? “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
8 They are higher than the heavens— what can you do? They are deeper than Sheol— what can you know? It is higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know? <i>It is</i> as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? “<i>They are as</i> high <i>as</i> the heavens; what can you do? Deeper than Sheol; what can you know? They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know?
9 Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea. Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea. The measure thereof <i>is</i> longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. “Its measurement is longer than the earth And broader than the sea. Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.
10 If He comes along to imprison you, or convenes a court, who can stop Him? If he passes through and imprisons and summons the court, who can turn him back? If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him? “If He passes by or apprehends <i>people,</i> Or calls an assembly, who can restrain Him? “If he comes along and confines you in prison and convenes a court, who can oppose him?
11 Surely He knows the deceit of men. If He sees iniquity, does He not take note? For he knows worthless men; when he sees iniquity, will he not consider it? For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider <i>it</i>? “For He knows false people, And He sees injustice without investigating. Surely he recognizes deceivers; and when he sees evil, does he not take note?
12 But a witless man can no more become wise than the colt of a wild donkey can be born a man! But a stupid man will get understanding when a wild donkey’s colt is born a man! For vain man would be wise, though man be born <i>like</i> a wild ass's colt. “An idiot will become intelligent When a wild donkey is born a human. But the witless can no more become wise than a wild donkey’s colt can be born human.
13 As for you, if you direct your heart and lift up your hands to Him, “If you prepare your heart, you will stretch out your hands toward him. If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him; “If you would direct your heart <i>rightly</i> And spread out your hands to Him, “Yet if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him,
14 if you put away the iniquity in your hand, and allow no injustice to dwell in your tents, If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let not injustice dwell in your tents. If iniquity <i>be</i> in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles. If wrongdoing is in your hand, put it far away, And do not let malice dwell in your tents; if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent,
15 then indeed you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and unafraid. Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish; you will be secure and will not fear. For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear: Then, indeed, you could lift up your face without <i>moral</i> blemish, And you would be firmly established and not fear. then, free of fault, you will lift up your face; you will stand firm and without fear.
16 For you will forget your misery, recalling it only as waters gone by. You will forget your misery; you will remember it as waters that have passed away. Because thou shalt forget <i>thy</i> misery, <i>and</i> remember <i>it</i> as waters <i>that</i> pass away: “For you would forget <i>your</i> trouble; Like waters that have passed by, you would remember <i>it.</i> You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by.
17 Your life will be brighter than noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. And your life will be brighter than the noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. And <i>thine</i> age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning. “Your life would be brighter than noonday; Darkness would be like the morning. Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like morning.
18 You will be secure, because there is hope, and you will look around and lie down in safety. And you will feel secure, because there is hope; you will look around and take your rest in security. And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig <i>about thee, and</i> thou shalt take thy rest in safety. “Then you would trust, because there is hope; And you would look around and rest securely. You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety.
19 You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor. You will lie down, and none will make you afraid; many will court your favor. Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make <i>thee</i> afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee. “You would lie down and none would disturb <i>you,</i> And many would flatter you. You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid, and many will court your favor.
20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; they will hope for their last breath.” But the eyes of the wicked will fail; all way of escape will be lost to them, and their hope is to breathe their last.” But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope <i>shall be as</i> the giving up of the ghost. “But the eyes of the wicked will fail, And there will be no escape for them; And their hope is to breathe their last.” But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; their hope will become a dying gasp.”
