1 Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Now faith is <i>the</i> certainty of <i>things</i> hoped for, a proof of things not seen. Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
2 This is why the ancients were commended. For by it the people of old received their commendation. For by it the elders obtained a good report. For by it the people of old gained approval. This is what the ancients were commended for.
3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By faith we understand that the world has been created by the word of God so that what is seen has not been made out of things that are visible. But without faith <i>it is</i> impossible to please <i>him</i>: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and <i>that</i> he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. And without faith it is impossible to please <i>Him,</i> for the one who comes to God must believe that He exists, and <i>that</i> He proves to be One who rewards those who seek Him. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, <i>so many</i> as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. Therefore even from one man, and one who was <i>as good as</i> dead at that, there were born <i>descendants who were</i> just as the stars of heaven in number, and as the innumerable <i>grains of</i> sand along the seashore. 13 All these people died in faith, without having received the things they were promised. However, they saw them and welcomed them from afar. And they acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and in a sense, he did receive Isaac back from death. He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. Accounting that God <i>was</i> able to raise <i>him</i> up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. He considered that God is able to raise <i>people</i> even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type. Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.
