1 And Saul was there, giving approval to Stephen’s death. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 God-fearing men buried Stephen and mourned deeply over him. Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison. As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed <i>them</i> to prison. 4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ to them. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. 6 The crowds gave their undivided attention to Philip’s message and to the signs they saw him perform. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. The crowds were paying attention with one mind to what was being said by Philip, as they heard and saw the signs which he was performing. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said.
7 With loud shrieks, unclean spirits came out of many who were possessed, and many of the paralyzed and lame were healed. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed <i>with them</i>: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. For <i>in the case of</i> many who had unclean spirits, they were coming out <i>of them</i> shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been paralyzed or limped <i>on crutches</i> were healed. 9 Prior to that time, a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and astounded the people of Samaria. He claimed to be someone great, But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: Now a man named Simon had previously been practicing magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great; Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,
10 and all the people, from the least to the greatest, heeded his words and said, “This man is the divine power called the Great Power. They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the power of God that is called Great.” To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. and all <i>the people,</i> from small to great, were paying attention to him, saying, “This man is the Power of God that is called Great.” and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”
11 They paid close attention to him because he had astounded them for a long time with his sorcery. And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries. And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his magic arts. They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery.
12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the gospel of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria.
15 On their arrival, they prayed for them to receive the Holy Spirit. who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: who came down and prayed for them that they would receive the Holy Spirit. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
16 For the Holy Spirit had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 20 But Peter replied, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could acquire the gift of God with money! Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!
21 You have no part or share in our ministry, because your heart is not right before God. You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. You have no part or share in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent, therefore, of your wickedness, and pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will forgive you for the intent of your heart. Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. Therefore, repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord <i>that,</i> if possible, the intention of your heart will be forgiven you. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.
23 For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and captive to iniquity. For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.” For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and <i>in</i> the bond of iniquity. For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of unrighteousness.” For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Then Simon answered, “ Pray to the Lord for me, so that nothing you have said may happen to me. And Simon answered, “Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.” Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. But Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.” Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25 And after Peter and John had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many of the Samaritan villages. Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans. And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans. 26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go south to the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Get ready and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a desert <i>road.</i>) Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”
27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official in charge of the entire treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. He had gone to Jerusalem to worship, And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, So he got ready and went; and there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he had come to Jerusalem to worship, So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,
28 and on his return was sitting in his chariot reading Isaiah the prophet. and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading Isaiah the prophet. and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet.
29 The Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to that chariot and stay by it. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.” The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
30 So Philip ran up and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading? Philip asked. So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And Philip ran thither to <i>him</i>, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
31 “How can I, he said, “unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. And he said, “Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so He did not open His mouth. Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this: “HE WAS LED LIKE A SHEEP TO SLAUGHTER; AND LIKE A LAMB THAT IS SILENT BEFORE ITS SHEARER, SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH. This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
33 In His humiliation He was deprived of justice. Who can recount His descendants? For His life was removed from the earth.” In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. “IN HUMILIATION HIS JUSTICE WAS TAKEN AWAY; WHO WILL DESCRIBE HIS GENERATION? FOR HIS LIFE IS TAKEN AWAY FROM THE EARTH.” In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”
34 “Tell me, said the eunuch, “who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else? And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? The eunuch answered Philip and said, “Please <i>tell me,</i> of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself, or of someone else?” The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?”
35 Then Philip began with this very Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him. Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
36 As they traveled along the road and came to some water, the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is there to prevent me from being baptized?” And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And as they went on <i>their</i> way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, <i>here is</i> water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?” As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And he ordered that the chariot stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him. And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.
39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, but went on his way rejoicing. And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; and the eunuch no longer saw him, but went on his way rejoicing. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
40 But Philip appeared at Azotus and traveled through that region, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he came to Caesarea. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he kept preaching the gospel to all the cities, until he came to Caesarea. Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.
