1 When Rehoboam had established his kingdom and made himself strong, he and all Israel abandoned the LORD's teachings. When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him. After Rehoboam’s position as king was established and he had become strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the LORD.
2 In the fifth year of Rehoboam's reign, King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem. This happened because all Israel was not loyal to the LORD. I will hand you over to Shishak.| Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “Thus says the LORD, ‘You abandoned me, so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak.’” Then the prophet Shemaiah came to Rehoboam and to the leaders of Judah who had assembled in Jerusalem for fear of Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the LORD says, ‘You have abandoned me; therefore, I now abandon you to Shishak.’”
6 Then the commanders of Israel and the king humbled themselves. |The LORD is right!| they said. Then the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is righteous.” The leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The LORD is just.”
7 When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, he spoke his word to Shemaiah: |They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them. In a little while I will give them an escape. I will not use Shishak to pour my anger on Jerusalem. When the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: “They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. When the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, this word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: “Since they have humbled themselves, I will not destroy them but will soon give them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.
8 But they will become his servants so that they can learn the difference between serving me and serving foreign kings.| Nevertheless, they shall be servants to him, that they may know my service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.” They will, however, become subject to him, so that they may learn the difference between serving me and serving the kings of other lands.”
9 King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem and took the treasures from the LORD's temple and the royal palace. He took them all. He took the gold shields Solomon had made. So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. He took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king’s house. He took away everything. He also took away the shields of gold that Solomon had made, When Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem, he carried off the treasures of the temple of the LORD and the treasures of the royal palace. He took everything, including the gold shields Solomon had made.
10 So King Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them and put them by the entrance to the royal palace, where the captains of the guards were stationed. and King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king’s house. 11 Whenever the king went into the LORD's temple, guards carried the shields and then returned them to the guardroom. And as often as the king went into the house of the LORD, the guard came and carried them and brought them back to the guardroom. 12 After Rehoboam humbled himself, the LORD was no longer angry with him and didn't completely destroy him. So things went well in Judah. And when he humbled himself the wrath of the LORD turned from him, so as not to make a complete destruction. Moreover, conditions were good in Judah. Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the LORD’s anger turned from him, and he was not totally destroyed. Indeed, there was some good in Judah.
13 King Rehoboam strengthened his position in Jerusalem and ruled. He was 41 years old when he began to rule. He ruled for 17 years in Jerusalem, the city that the LORD chose from all the tribes of Israel, the city where the LORD put his name. (Rehoboam's mother was an Ammonite woman named Naamah.) So King Rehoboam grew strong in Jerusalem and reigned. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city that the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonite. King Rehoboam established himself firmly in Jerusalem and continued as king. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel in which to put his Name. 14 He did evil things because he was not serious about dedicating himself to serving the LORD. And he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the LORD. He did evil because he had not set his heart on seeking the LORD.
15 Aren't the events concerning Rehoboam from first to last written in the records of the prophet Shemaiah and the records of the seer Iddo in the genealogies? There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam as long as they lived. Now the acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the chronicles of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer? There were continual wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam. As for the events of Rehoboam’s reign, from beginning to end, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer that deal with genealogies? There was continual warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.
16 Rehoboam lay down in death with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. His son Abijah succeeded him as king. And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, and Abijah his son reigned in his place. Rehoboam rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. And Abijah his son succeeded him as king.
