New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Then Job spoke again: | 1Then Job replied, |
“My complaint today is still a bitter one, and I try hard not to groan aloud. | 2"Even today my complaint is rebellion; His hand is heavy despite my groaning. |
If only I knew where to find God, I would go to his court. | 3"Oh that I knew where I might find Him, That I might come to His seat! |
I would lay out my case and present my arguments. | 4"I would present my case before Him And fill my mouth with arguments. |
Then I would listen to his reply and understand what he says to me. | 5"I would learn the words which He would answer, And perceive what He would say to me. |
Would he use his great power to argue with me? No, he would give me a fair hearing. | 6"Would He contend with me by the greatness of His power? No, surely He would pay attention to me. |
Honest people can reason with him, so I would be forever acquitted by my judge. | 7"There the upright would reason with Him; And I would be delivered forever from my Judge. |
I go east, but he is not there. I go west, but I cannot find him. | 8"Behold, I go forward but He is not there, And backward, but I cannot perceive Him; |
I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden. I look to the south, but he is concealed. | 9When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him; He turns on the right, I cannot see Him. |
“But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold. | 10"But He knows the way I take; When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold. |
For I have stayed on God’s paths; I have followed his ways and not turned aside. | 11"My foot has held fast to His path; I have kept His way and not turned aside. |
I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food. | 12"I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food. |
But once he has made his decision, who can change his mind? Whatever he wants to do, he does. | 13"But He is unique and who can turn Him? And what His soul desires, that He does. |
So he will do to me whatever he has planned. He controls my destiny. | 14"For He performs what is appointed for me, And many such decrees are with Him. |
No wonder I am so terrified in his presence. When I think of it, terror grips me. | 15"Therefore, I would be dismayed at His presence; When I consider, I am terrified of Him. |
God has made me sick at heart; the Almighty has terrified me. | 16"It is God who has made my heart faint, And the Almighty who has dismayed me, |
Darkness is all around me; thick, impenetrable darkness is everywhere. | 17But I am not silenced by the darkness, Nor deep gloom which covers me. |
