New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Then Job spoke again: | 1Then Job answered and said, |
“My complaint today is still a bitter one, and I try hard not to groan aloud. | 2Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning. |
If only I knew where to find God, I would go to his court. | 3Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! |
I would lay out my case and present my arguments. | 4I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. |
Then I would listen to his reply and understand what he says to me. | 5I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me. |
Would he use his great power to argue with me? No, he would give me a fair hearing. | 6Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. |
Honest people can reason with him, so I would be forever acquitted by my judge. | 7There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge. |
I go east, but he is not there. I go west, but I cannot find him. | 8Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: |
I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden. I look to the south, but he is concealed. | 9On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him: |
“But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold. | 10But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. |
For I have stayed on God’s paths; I have followed his ways and not turned aside. | 11My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined. |
I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food. | 12Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. |
But once he has made his decision, who can change his mind? Whatever he wants to do, he does. | 13But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth. |
So he will do to me whatever he has planned. He controls my destiny. | 14For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him. |
No wonder I am so terrified in his presence. When I think of it, terror grips me. | 15Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him. |
God has made me sick at heart; the Almighty has terrified me. | 16For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me: |
Darkness is all around me; thick, impenetrable darkness is everywhere. | 17Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face. |
