New King James Version | English Standard Version |
“Set the trumpet to your mouth! He shall come like an eagle against the house of the LORD, Because they have transgressed My covenant And rebelled against My law. | 1Set the trumpet to your lips! One like a vulture is over the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant and rebelled against my law. |
Israel will cry to Me, ‘My God, we know You!’ | 2To me they cry, “My God, we—Israel—know you.” |
Israel has rejected the good; The enemy will pursue him. | 3Israel has spurned the good; the enemy shall pursue him. |
“They set up kings, but not by Me; They made princes, but I did not acknowledge them. From their silver and gold They made idols for themselves— That they might be cut off. | 4They made kings, but not through me. They set up princes, but I knew it not. With their silver and gold they made idols for their own destruction. |
Your calf is rejected, O Samaria! My anger is aroused against them— How long until they attain to innocence? | 5I have spurned your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence? |
For from Israel is even this: A workman made it, and it is not God; But the calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces. | 6For it is from Israel; a craftsman made it; it is not God. The calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces. |
“They sow the wind, And reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no bud; It shall never produce meal. If it should produce, Aliens would swallow it up. | 7For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it. |
Israel is swallowed up; Now they are among the Gentiles Like a vessel in which is no pleasure. | 8Israel is swallowed up; already they are among the nations as a useless vessel. |
For they have gone up to Assyria, Like a wild donkey alone by itself; Ephraim has hired lovers. | 9For they have gone up to Assyria, a wild donkey wandering alone; Ephraim has hired lovers. |
Yes, though they have hired among the nations, Now I will gather them; And they shall sorrow a little, Because of the burden of the king of princes. | 10Though they hire allies among the nations, I will soon gather them up. And the king and princes shall soon writhe because of the tribute. |
“Because Ephraim has made many altars for sin, They have become for him altars for sinning. | 11Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning, they have become to him altars for sinning. |
I have written for him the great things of My law, But they were considered a strange thing. | 12Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands, they would be regarded as a strange thing. |
For the sacrifices of My offerings they sacrifice flesh and eat it, But the LORD does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins. They shall return to Egypt. | 13As for my sacrificial offerings, they sacrifice meat and eat it, but the LORD does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt. |
“For Israel has forgotten his Maker, And has built temples; Judah also has multiplied fortified cities; But I will send fire upon his cities, And it shall devour his palaces.” | 14For Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces, and Judah has multiplied fortified cities; so I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour her strongholds. |
