| 1The family heads of the clan of Gilead son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, who were from the clans of the descendants of Joseph, came and spoke before Moses and the leaders, the heads of the Israelite families. | 1Then the heads of the family groups of the Gileadites, the descendant of Machir, the descendant of Manasseh, who were from the Josephite families, approached and spoke before Moses and the leaders who were the heads of the Israelite families. |
| 2They said, "When the LORD commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, he ordered you to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters. | 2They said, "The LORD commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance by lot to the Israelites; and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters. |
| 3Now suppose they marry men from other Israelite tribes; then their inheritance will be taken from our ancestral inheritance and added to that of the tribe they marry into. And so part of the inheritance allotted to us will be taken away. | 3Now if they should be married to one of the men from another Israelite tribe, their inheritance would be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry. As a result, it will be taken from the lot of our inheritance. |
| 4When the Year of Jubilee for the Israelites comes, their inheritance will be added to that of the tribe into which they marry, and their property will be taken from the tribal inheritance of our ancestors." | 4And when the Jubilee of the Israelites is to take place, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry. | 5Then at the LORD's command Moses gave this order to the Israelites: "What the tribe of the descendants of Joseph is saying is right. | 5Then Moses gave a ruling to the Israelites by the word of the LORD: "What the tribe of the Josephites is saying is right. |
| 6This is what the LORD commands for Zelophehad's daughters: They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within their father's tribal clan. | 6This is what the LORD has commanded for Zelophehad's daughters: 'Let them marry whomever they think best, only they must marry within the family of their father's tribe. |
| 7No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors. | 7In this way the inheritance of the Israelites will not be transferred from tribe to tribe. But every one of the Israelites must retain the ancestral heritage. |
| 8Every daughter who inherits land in any Israelite tribe must marry someone in her father's tribal clan, so that every Israelite will possess the inheritance of their ancestors. | 8And every daughter who possesses an inheritance from any of the tribes of the Israelites must become the wife of a man from any family in her father's tribe, so that every Israelite may retain the inheritance of his fathers. |
| 9No inheritance may pass from one tribe to another, for each Israelite tribe is to keep the land it inherits." | 9No inheritance may pass from tribe to tribe. But every one of the tribes of the Israelites must retain its inheritance." |
| 10So Zelophehad's daughters did as the LORD commanded Moses. | 10As the LORD had commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did. |
| 11Zelophehad's daughters--Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milkah and Noah--married their cousins on their father's side. | 11For the daughters of Zelophehad--Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah--were married to the sons of their uncles. |
| 12They married within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in their father's tribe and clan. | 12They were married into the families of the Manassehites, the descendants of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father's family. |
| 13These are the commands and regulations the LORD gave through Moses to the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho. | 13These are the commandments and the decisions that the LORD commanded the Israelites through the authority of Moses, on the plains of Moab by the Jordan River opposite Jericho. |
