This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. | 1But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come. |
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, | 2For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, |
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, | 3unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good, |
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; | 4traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, |
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. | 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Turn away from such as these! |
For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, | 6They are the kind who worm their way into households and captivate vulnerable women who are weighed down with sins and led astray by various passions, |
Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. | 7who are always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. |
Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. | 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth. They are depraved in mind and disqualified from the faith. |
But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was. | 9But they will not advance much further. For just like Jannes and Jambres, their folly will be plain to everyone. |
But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, | 10You, however, have observed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my perseverance, |
Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. | 11my persecutions, and the sufferings that came upon me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. |
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. | 12Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, |
But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. | 13while evil men and imposters go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. |
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; | 14But as for you, continue in the things you have learned and firmly believed, since you know from whom you have learned them. |
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. | 15From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. |
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: | 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, |
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. | 17so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work. |
