Christian Standard Bible | International Standard Version |
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters, | 1Now we ask you, brothers, regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, and our gathering together to him, |
not to be easily upset or troubled, either by a prophecy or by a message or by a letter supposedly from us, alleging that the day of the Lord has come. | 2not to be so quickly upset or alarmed when someone claims that we said, either by some spirit, conversation, or letter that the Day of the Lord has already come. |
Don't let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. | 3Do not let anyone deceive you in any way, for it will not come unless the rebellion takes place first and the man of sin, who is destined for destruction, is revealed. |
He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God's temple, proclaiming that he himself is God. | 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship. As a result, he seats himself in the sanctuary of God and himself declares that he is God. |
Don't you remember that when I was still with you I used to tell you about this? | 5Don't you remember that I repeatedly told you about these things when I was still with you? |
And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time. | 6You know what it is that is now holding him back, so that he will be revealed when his time comes. |
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way, | 7For the secret of this lawlessness is already at work, but only until the person now holding it back gets out of the way. |
and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will bring him to nothing at the appearance of his coming. | 8Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy with the breath of his mouth, rendering him powerless by the manifestation of his coming. |
The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan's working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders, | 9The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the power of Satan. He will use every kind of power, including miraculous signs, lying wonders, |
and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved. | 10and every type of evil to deceive those who are dying, those who refused to love the truth that would save them. |
For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie, | 11For this reason, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie. |
so that all will be condemned--those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness. | 12Then all who have not believed the truth but have taken pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned. |
But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. | 13At all times we are obligated to thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God chose you to be the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through faith in the truth. |
He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 14With this purpose in mind, he called you through our proclamation of the gospel so that you would obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. |
So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by what we said or what we wrote. | 15So then, brothers, stand firm, and cling to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. |
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, | 16May our Lord Jesus, the Messiah himself, and may God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, |
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word. | 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good action and word. |
