Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters, | 1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to Him, we ask you, brothers, |
not to be easily upset or troubled, either by a prophecy or by a message or by a letter supposedly from us, alleging that the day of the Lord has come. | 2not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed by any spirit or message or letter seeming to be from us, alleging that the Day of the Lord has already come. |
Don't let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. | 3Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness—the son of destruction—is revealed. |
He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God's temple, proclaiming that he himself is God. | 4He will oppose and exalt himself above every so-called god or object of worship. So he will seat himself in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. |
Don't you remember that when I was still with you I used to tell you about this? | 5Do you not remember that I told you these things while I was still with you? |
And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time. | 6And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. |
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way, | 7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one who now restrains it will continue until he is taken out of the way. |
and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will bring him to nothing at the appearance of his coming. | 8And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of His mouth and annihilate by the majesty of His arrival. |
The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan's working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders, | 9The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder, |
and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved. | 10and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them. |
For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie, | 11For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie, |
so that all will be condemned--those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness. | 12in order that judgment may come upon all who have disbelieved the truth and delighted in wickedness. |
But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. | 13But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning to be saved by the sanctification of the Spirit and by faith in the truth. |
He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 14To this He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by what we said or what we wrote. | 15Therefore, brothers, stand firm and cling to the traditions we taught you, whether by speech or by letter. |
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, | 16Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who by grace has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope, |
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word. | 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good word and deed. |
