Berean Study Bible | New Living Translation |
But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come. | 1You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. |
For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, | 2For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. |
unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good, | 3They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. |
traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, | 4They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. |
having a form of godliness but denying its power. Turn away from such as these! | 5They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! |
They are the kind who worm their way into households and captivate vulnerable women who are weighed down with sins and led astray by various passions, | 6They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win the confidence of vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by various desires. |
who are always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. | 7(Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never able to understand the truth.) |
Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth. They are depraved in mind and disqualified from the faith. | 8These teachers oppose the truth just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith. |
But they will not advance much further. For just like Jannes and Jambres, their folly will be plain to everyone. | 9But they won’t get away with this for long. Someday everyone will recognize what fools they are, just as with Jannes and Jambres. Paul’s Charge to Timothy |
You, however, have observed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my perseverance, | 10But you, Timothy, certainly know what I teach, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance. |
my persecutions, and the sufferings that came upon me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. | 11You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra—but the Lord rescued me from all of it. |
Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, | 12Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. |
while evil men and imposters go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. | 13But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived. |
But as for you, continue in the things you have learned and firmly believed, since you know from whom you have learned them. | 14But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. |
From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. | 15You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. |
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, | 16All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. |
so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work. | 17God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. |
