| 3unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good, | 3unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, |
| 4traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, | 4treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, |
| 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Turn away from such as these! | 5holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. |
| 6They are the kind who worm their way into households and captivate vulnerable women who are weighed down with sins and led astray by various passions, | 6For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, |
| 7who are always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. | 7always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. |
| 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth. They are depraved in mind and disqualified from the faith. | 8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. |
| 9But they will not advance much further. For just like Jannes and Jambres, their folly will be plain to everyone. | 9But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes's and Jambres's folly was also. |
| 10You, however, have observed my teaching, my conduct, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my perseverance, | 10Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, |
| 11my persecutions, and the sufferings that came upon me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. | 11persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! |
| 12Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, | 12Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. |
| 13while evil men and imposters go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. | 13But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. |
| 14But as for you, continue in the things you have learned and firmly believed, since you know from whom you have learned them. | 14You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, |
| 15From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. | 15and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. |
| 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, | 16All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; |
| 17so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work. | 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. |
