6An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, having children who are believers and who are not open to accusation of indiscretion or insubordination.6if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.
7As God’s steward, an overseer must be above reproach—not self-absorbed, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for money.7For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,
8Instead, he must be hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.8but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.
9He must hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught, so that he can encourage others by sound teaching and refute those who contradict it.9He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
10For many are rebellious and full of empty talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision,10For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party.
11who must be silenced. For the sake of dishonorable gain, they undermine entire households and teach things they should not.11They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.
12As one of their own prophets has said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”12One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
13This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sternly, so that they will be sound in the faith13This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
14and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of men who have rejected the truth.14not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.
