Berean Study Bible | English Standard Version |
Put the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms over the house of the LORD, because the people have transgressed My covenant and rebelled against My law. | 1Set the trumpet to your lips! One like a vulture is over the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant and rebelled against my law. |
Israel cries out to Me, “O our God, we know You!” | 2To me they cry, “My God, we—Israel—know you.” |
But Israel has rejected good; an enemy will pursue him. | 3Israel has spurned the good; the enemy shall pursue him. |
They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes, but without My approval. With their silver and gold they make themselves idols, to their own destruction. | 4They made kings, but not through me. They set up princes, but I knew it not. With their silver and gold they made idols for their own destruction. |
He has rejected your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence? | 5I have spurned your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence? |
For this thing is from Israel—a craftsman made it, and it is not God. It will be broken to pieces, that calf of Samaria. | 6For it is from Israel; a craftsman made it; it is not God. The calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces. |
For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if it should produce, the foreigners would swallow it up. | 7For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it. |
Israel is swallowed up! Now they are among the nations like a worthless vessel. | 8Israel is swallowed up; already they are among the nations as a useless vessel. |
For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey on its own. Ephraim has hired lovers. | 9For they have gone up to Assyria, a wild donkey wandering alone; Ephraim has hired lovers. |
Though they hire allies among the nations, I will now round them up, and they will begin to diminish under the oppression of the king of princes. | 10Though they hire allies among the nations, I will soon gather them up. And the king and princes shall soon writhe because of the tribute. |
Though Ephraim multiplied the altars for sin, they became his altars for sinning. | 11Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning, they have become to him altars for sinning. |
Though I wrote for them the great things of My law, they regarded them as something strange. | 12Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands, they would be regarded as a strange thing. |
Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me, and though they eat the meat, the LORD does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins: They will return to Egypt. | 13As for my sacrificial offerings, they sacrifice meat and eat it, but the LORD does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt. |
Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; Judah has multiplied its fortified cities. But I will send fire upon their cities, and it will consume their citadels. | 14For Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces, and Judah has multiplied fortified cities; so I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour her strongholds. |
