New Living Translation
Stay here in this land. If you do, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you. For I am sorry about all the punishment I have had to bring upon you.
King James Bible
If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
Darby Bible Translation
If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not overthrow you, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you.
World English Bible
If you will still live in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I grieve over the distress that I have brought on you.
Young's Literal Translation
'If ye do certainly dwell in this land, then I have builded you up, and I throw not down; and I have planted you, and I pluck not up; for I have repented concerning the evil that I have done to you.
Jeremiah 42:10 Parallel
CommentaryWesley's Notes on the Bible
42:10 I repent - I am satisfied with the punishment your nation hath undergone, and as to the remainder, will change the course of my providence.
If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed,
but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned.
I will watch over and care for them, and I will bring them back here again. I will build them up and not tear them down. I will plant them and not uproot them.
But the people of any nation that submits to the king of Babylon will be allowed to stay in their own country to farm the land as usual. I, the LORD, have spoken!'"
In the past I deliberately uprooted and tore down this nation. I overthrew it, destroyed it, and brought disaster upon it. But in the future I will just as deliberately plant it and build it up. I, the LORD, have spoken!
I will restore the fortunes of Judah and Israel and rebuild their towns.
So Johanan and the other guerrilla leaders and all the people refused to obey the LORD's command to stay in Judah.
