CommentaryWesley's Notes on the Bible
50:24 I die, but God will surely visit you - To this purpose Jacob had spoken to him, Ge 48:21. Thus must we comfort others with the same comforts wherewith we ourselves have been comforted of God, and encourage them to rest on those promises which have been our support. Joseph was, under God, both the protector and benefactor of his brethren, and what would become of them now he was dying? Why let this be their comfort, God will surely visit you. God's gracious visits will serve to make up the loss of our best friends, and bring you out of this land - And therefore, they must not hope to settle there, nor look upon it as their rest for ever; they must set their hearts upon the land of promise, and call that their home.
It was by faith that Joseph, when he was about to die, said confidently that the people of Israel would leave Egypt. He even commanded them to take his bones with them when they left.
I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession.
Go and walk through the land in every direction, for I am giving it to you."
Then the LORD told him, "I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as your possession."
But Abram replied, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I be sure that I will actually possess it?"
Live here as a foreigner in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. I hereby confirm that I will give all these lands to you and your descendants, just as I solemnly promised Abraham, your father.
At the top of the stairway stood the LORD, and he said, "I am the LORD, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants.
