A memorial of blowing of trumpets - This is generally called the feast of trumpets; and as it took place on the first day of the seventh month, Tisri, which answers to September, which month was the commencement of what was called the civil year, the feast probably had no other design than to celebrate the commencement of that year, if indeed such a distinction obtained among the ancient Jews. See the note on Exodus 12:2. Some think creation began at this time.

Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them,
Once a year Aaron shall make atonement on its horns. This annual atonement must be made with the blood of the atoning sin offering for the generations to come. It is most holy to the LORD."
"This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work--whether native-born or a foreigner residing among you--
because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the LORD, you will be clean from all your sins.
The LORD said to Moses,
Do not do any work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the LORD your God.
