Stirred up the people - The word used here σαλεύειν saleuein denotes properly "to agitate" or "excite," as the waves of the sea are agitated by the wind. The figure is often employed by the Classic writers, and also occurs in the Scriptures. See Psalm 65:7; Isaiah 17:12-13; Jeremiah 46:7-8.

The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.
And he was accompanied by Sopater of Berea, the son of Pyrrhus, and by Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia.
