The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. | 2And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. | 2And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. | 2And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. | 2The beast I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like a bear's, and his mouth was like a lion's mouth. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. |
One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. | 3One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. | 3I saw one of his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast; | 3And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. | 3One of his heads appeared to be fatally wounded, but his fatal wound was healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast. |
People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?" | 4And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?” | 4they worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?" | 4And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? | 4They worshiped the dragon because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to wage war against him?" |
The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. | 5And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. | 5There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him. | 5And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. | 5A mouth was given to him to speak boasts and blasphemies. He was also given authority to act for 42 months. |
It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. | 6It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. | 6And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. | 6And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. | 6He began to speak blasphemies against God: to blaspheme His name and His dwelling--those who dwell in heaven. |
It was given power to wage war against God's holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. | 7Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, | 7It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. | 7And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. | 7And he was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them. 8All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world. | 8and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. | 8All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. | 8And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. | 8All those who live on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name was not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slaughtered. |
Whoever has ears, let them hear. | 9If anyone has an ear, let him hear: | 9If anyone has an ear, let him hear. | 9If any man have an ear, let him hear. | 9If anyone has an ear, he should listen: |
"If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword they will be killed." This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God's people. | 10If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes; if anyone is to be slain with the sword, with the sword must he be slain. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints. | 10If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints. | 10He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. | 10If anyone is destined for captivity, into captivity he goes. If anyone is to be killed with a sword, with a sword he will be killed. This demands the perseverance and faith of the saints. |
The Beast Out of the Earth 11Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. | 11Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. | 11Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb and he spoke as a dragon. | 11And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. | 11Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; he had two horns like a lamb, but he sounded like a dragon. |
It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. | 12It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. | 12He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. | 12And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. | 12He exercises all the authority of the first beast on his behalf and compels the earth and those who live on it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. |
And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. | 13It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, | 13He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. | 13And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, | 13He also performs great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in front of people. |
Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. | 14and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. | 14And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. | 14And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. | 14He deceives those who live on the earth because of the signs that he is permitted to perform on behalf of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image of the beast who had the sword wound and yet lived. |
The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. | 15And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. | 15And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed. | 15And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. | 15He was permitted to give a spirit to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could both speak and cause whoever would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. |
The Mark of the Beast 16It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, | 16Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, | 16And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, | 16And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: | 16And he requires everyone--small and great, rich and poor, free and slave--to be given a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, |
so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. | 17so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. | 17and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. | 17And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. | 17so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark: the beast's name or the number of his name. |
This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666. | 18This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666. | 18Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six. | 18Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. | 18Here is wisdom: The one who has understanding must calculate the number of the beast, because it is the number of a man. His number is 666. |
