Witness Against Fear Rev. Jerzy Popiełuszko (1947–1984) Jerzy Popiełuszko was a Polish priest whose preaching became a steady light during communist repression. Known for calm courage rather than political showmanship, he urged ordinary believers—especially workers and families—to keep their consciences clean, their speech truthful, and their hearts free from hatred. He is remembered for calling Christians to resist lies without becoming liars, to oppose cruelty without becoming cruel, and to suffer without surrendering hope. Warsaw, Workers, and the “Masses for the Homeland” Serving in Warsaw, Popiełuszko became closely identified with the Solidarity movement and with laborers pressured by intimidation, propaganda, and fear. At St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, his monthly “Masses for the Homeland” drew crowds seeking prayer, moral clarity, and spiritual strength. His message repeatedly returned to the Bible’s command to conquer evil by a better power than violence: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21) Abduction and Death near Włocławek On October 19, 1984, Popiełuszko was abducted while traveling back toward Warsaw after ministering in Bydgoszcz. Agents of Poland’s secret police stopped his car, seized him, and subjected him to brutal torture. Bound, gagged, and beaten, he was ultimately thrown into the waters near Włocławek with his body weighed down. His tortured body was found on October 30, eleven days after the abduction—an event that shocked the nation and exposed the moral bankruptcy of tyranny. Legacy of Faithful Courage Popiełuszko’s captors sought silence; instead, his death amplified faith. He showed that Christian heroism is not bravado, but steadfast obedience—praying, telling the truth, and refusing revenge. Many who mourned him also took fresh courage to forgive, to persevere, and to worship openly. His witness echoes the promise: “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:10) In every age, his life reminds believers that courage, not compromise, honors Christ. |
