Disarmed by the Gospel

Urbano Gómez

On October 23, 1984, Urbano Gómez rode into a Peruvian town toward a small Protestant church with a heart already decided. Rumors had painted the pastor as corrupt, and suspicion had hardened into resolve. Hidden in his saddlebag were a pistol and a knife—unknown even to his wife—because he intended to kill the preacher at the first hint of impropriety.

October 23, 1984—Worship “Decently and in Order”

Instead of scandal, Gómez encountered a congregation gathered with reverence. Hymns were sung without theatrics, Scripture was read plainly, and prayers were offered with humility. The orderliness of the service quietly contradicted the slanders. The scene embodied the apostolic instruction: “But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner” (1 Corinthians 14:40).

When the pastor preached Christ crucified and risen, the message did what no human guard could do. The Word exposed Gómez’s intent and met him with mercy: “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). At the altar call, the Lord disarmed him more surely than any man; he stepped forward not to accuse, but to confess. The weapons stayed hidden, and repentance came into the open.

Conversion and Christian Character

Gómez’s change was not mere emotion but a turning of the will—away from violence and toward the fear of God. The quiet heroism that day belonged to many: a pastor who preached without compromise, a people who worshiped steadily, and a Savior who sought a sinner bent on bloodshed. Faith proved stronger than suspicion; love overcame hatred.

Significance for Peruvian Protestant Witness

Remembered as a turning point, the event cautions against the sin of slander and the ease with which suspicion can become violence. It also underscores a church’s calling to be above reproach, letting worship, preaching, and fellowship commend the truth. God used ordinary faithfulness to stop extraordinary evil.

Later Ministry

The former would-be attacker left the church as a new brother. In the years that followed, he served as an evangelist and teacher with HeartCry, testifying that Christ saves not only from sin’s penalty but from sin’s grip. His story continues to encourage believers to trust God’s Word, keep worship sincere, and answer hostility with patient, gospel clarity.
