Persevering for the Sudan

Roland Victor Bingham (1862–1942)

Roland Victor Bingham died on December 4, 1942, remembered for unwavering obedience to Christ’s call to take the gospel where it was scarcely known. An English believer with a steady, practical faith, he came to see the “Sudan” belt of Africa—stretching across the Sahel south of the Sahara—as a vast field with multitudes beyond the reach of Christian witness. His life’s work was marked less by sudden triumphs than by persistent return to the task.

Founding the Sudan Interior Mission (1893)

In 1893 Bingham and fellow workers helped found the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM), a venture born of prayer, biblical conviction, and the belief that hardship is not a sign to retreat when Christ has spoken. With companions such as Walter Gowans and Thomas John, he aimed to press into the interior—particularly toward regions like Northern Nigeria—where language barriers, distance, and suspicion of outsiders made entry difficult. Their purpose was simple: preach Christ, gather believers, and form local churches rooted in Scripture.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19–20)

Setbacks and Perseverance (1893–1902)

The early years were defined by repeated disappointments. Illness forced delays. Closed borders and shifting colonial controls obstructed travel. Teammates were lost to disease and exhaustion, and grief threatened to silence the work before it began. Yet Bingham became known for a kind of quiet heroism: not the bravery of spectacle, but the courage of staying faithful when progress is slow. Between 1893 and 1902 he kept praying, planning, recruiting, raising support, and returning—convinced that obedience is measured by faithfulness, not immediate results.

“Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

Legacy

The mission Bingham helped launch endured beyond him, sending laborers, translating and distributing Scripture, planting churches, and bringing gospel hope to communities long unreached. His story stands as a reminder that faithful sowing is never wasted: God often advances His kingdom through steady, unseen perseverance, and He honors those who endure for the sake of Christ.
