John Milton Is Born

John Milton (1608–1674)

Born December 9, 1608, in London, John Milton grew up in a home marked by earnest devotion, Scripture reading, and a serious regard for learning and music. His father, also named John Milton, was a skilled musician and a disciplined provider who fostered both piety and intellectual rigor. In a city shaped by commerce, church life, and political tension, the Miltons sought steadiness in truth, forming a household where the Word of God was not ornament but foundation.

Education and Calling

Milton’s studies at Christ’s College, Cambridge, refined his command of language and deepened his acquaintance with the Bible’s cadence and categories. He learned to weigh ideas carefully, to love what is excellent, and to resist shallow thinking. This training—paired with spiritual seriousness—equipped him to speak to his age with moral clarity. His life illustrates that gifts are not merely personal possessions but entrusted tools, meant to serve others under God’s authority.

Paradise Lost and Spiritual Realities

Milton’s most enduring work, Paradise Lost, set before readers the drama of creation, rebellion, temptation, and fall. With sweeping imagination, he pressed the conscience to consider the nature of sin and the gravity of disobedience, while also pointing to God’s sovereign purposes that are never thwarted. His poetic labor aimed beyond entertainment toward awakening: that hearts might fear the deceitfulness of evil and reverence the holiness and wisdom of God.

Blindness, Turmoil, and Perseverance

Later years brought severe trials—especially blindness amid national upheaval. Yet Milton continued to work, dictating his writing with patient endurance. This perseverance bears a quiet heroism: not the heroism of comfort, but of faithfulness under loss, trusting that obedience remains worthwhile when outcomes feel hidden. “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9) And: “Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)
