Healing a Long Exile

Act of Canonical Communion (May 17, 2007)

On May 17, 2007, in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Patriarch Alexy II and Metropolitan Laurus signed the Act of Canonical Communion, restoring full fellowship between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR). The act culminated in shared prayer and sacramental life, healing a rift that had grown from revolution, exile, and the long shadow of persecution.

ROCOR retained its independent hierarchy and internal governance. The chief structural change was that the election of ROCOR’s First Hierarch would be confirmed by the Patriarch of Moscow, whom ROCOR recognized as head of the whole Russian Church. This careful arrangement sought unity without erasing hard-won pastoral realities in the diaspora.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The setting carried its own testimony. The cathedral, destroyed under Soviet rule and later rebuilt, stands as a public reminder that what is torn down in hatred can be raised again. Its walls silently recall the countless believers—clergy and laity—who endured interrogation, prison camps, and mockery rather than deny Christ, and who passed the faith to their children when public worship was dangerous.

Patriarch Alexy II and Metropolitan Laurus

Patriarch Alexy II shepherded a church emerging from decades of state oppression, navigating the task of rebuilding parishes, seminaries, and spiritual life. Metropolitan Laurus, formed among the émigré communities, carried the memory of displacement and the burden of preserving tradition far from home. Their meeting was not merely administrative; it modeled repentance, restraint of suspicion, and a willingness to seek peace without pretending the past did not hurt.

Spiritual Significance and Legacy

The reconciliation honored steadfast witness: believers who kept the lamp of faith burning in both homeland and exile. It also offered a lesson in patient humility—unity is not achieved by force, but by truth spoken with charity. As Scripture urges, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3), and, “If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18).
