Faithfulness Under Constraint

May 27, 2007 Installation in Eritrea

On May 27, 2007, Abune Dioskoros was installed as the fourth patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The ceremony took place under the shadow of an unresolved crisis: his predecessor, Abune Antonios, remained under house arrest after resisting state interference in church life. For many believers inside and outside Eritrea, the day became a public sign of how quickly sacred offices can be pressured by earthly authority when the church’s freedom is constrained.

Abune Antonios (Deposed Patriarch)

Abune Antonios became known not for political ambition, but for pastoral conscience. He protested intrusion into the church’s governance and spoke against the persecution of evangelical believers—Christians whose worship, evangelism, and fellowship often faced harsh scrutiny. His refusal to surrender shepherding responsibility, even when isolated and silenced, reflected the quiet courage that does not depend on visibility. His stand echoes the apostolic conviction: “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

Abune Dioskoros (Installed Patriarch)

Abune Dioskoros’ installation highlighted the strain placed on church leadership when appointments are contested or shaped by coercion. Whatever one concludes about individuals, the event underscored a wider reality: when the state claims leverage over the pulpit, the sacraments, and the conscience, the church’s witness is endangered. Christians confess that Christ alone is Head of the church, and that no ruler can rightly claim lordship over what belongs to Him.

Spiritual Significance and Call to Prayer

This moment exposed a painful clash between temporal power and Christ’s rightful rule. It also reminds believers that faithfulness is sometimes measured by endurance rather than outcomes. “Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (2 Timothy 3:12) Pray for Eritrea, for imprisoned and pressured Christians, for Orthodox and evangelical pastors to shepherd boldly, and for the suffering to be upheld with steadfast hope—“Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)
