London Missionary Society (Founding, 1794)

On November 4, 1794, a gathering of believers in London formed the London Missionary Society (LMS), uniting Christians across church lines with a single aim: to carry the gospel to peoples who had not heard the name of Christ. At a time when many assumed the nations would remain beyond reach, these men and women acted on the conviction that Christ’s command is neither optional nor outdated. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). Their resolve was marked by prayer, sacrificial giving, and a willingness to face hardship for the sake of eternal souls.

The Society’s early meetings drew together pastors, lay leaders, and supporters who believed that God not only saves, but sends. They trusted providence over comfort, and mercy over mere curiosity about distant lands. Their unity did not erase differences, but placed the advance of the gospel above lesser disputes, a practical testimony to gospel love and shared obedience.

Courage on the Seas and First Fields

The era demanded uncommon heroism. Long voyages exposed missionaries to shipwreck, disease, isolation, and the grief of separation from home. Yet they went, believing that Christ is worthy and that no ocean can restrain His kingdom. Their faith echoed the promise, “How then can they call on the One in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in One of whom they have not heard?” (Romans 10:14).

LMS efforts soon reached the South Pacific and southern Africa, where the work required patience and endurance. Missionaries often labored without visible fruit for long seasons, learning languages, facing opposition, and serving communities through teaching and practical compassion. Perseverance became a quiet form of valor: continuing to speak truth, show kindness, and uphold holiness when results seemed slow.

The founding of the LMS stands as a reminder that Christ’s call still stands, and that ordinary believers—strengthened by prayer and Scripture—can attempt great things for God.
