A Snuff Box and a World Vision

Kettering and the Birth of a Missionary Society (1792)

On October 2, 1792, in the market town of Kettering, Northamptonshire, a small group of pastors met in a spirit of sober resolve. William Carey, John Ryland Jr., and ten fellow ministers formed the Particular Baptist Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Heathen—an unlikely beginning for what would become the Baptist Missionary Society. The gathering took place amid ordinary English life, yet with an extraordinary conviction: Christ’s command to make disciples had not expired with the apostles but still presses upon the church in every age.

The Men and the Conviction

William Carey, a former shoemaker turned pastor and teacher, had become burdened for the nations through Scripture, prayer, and careful attention to the world beyond Britain. John Ryland Jr., a learned pastor and friend, provided theological steadiness and public support. Andrew Fuller, a leading voice among the pastors, helped unite warm evangelistic urgency with doctrinal seriousness. Their partnership displayed a rare kind of Christian heroism—quiet, persistent, and willing to be misunderstood—rooted not in bravado but in confidence that God saves through the preaching of the gospel.

The Snuff Box and First Subscriptions

They had little money, yet they refused to let scarcity silence obedience. Their first support was gathered in a now-famous moment: Andrew Fuller’s snuff box was passed around to collect subscriptions, totaling about £13. The amount was small, but the act was large with faith—turning prayer into costly action and showing that sacrifice, however modest, can be holy when offered to the Lord.

Scripture, Faith, and Going Outward

Their purpose echoed the Lord’s own charge: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). They also trusted the promise, “How then can they call on the One they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard?” (Romans 10:14). Within months Carey would be sent to India, helping reshape modern missions by insisting that gospel compassion, doctrinal clarity, perseverance, and practical planning belong together.

Enduring Significance

Kettering’s meeting reminds believers that faithful work often begins with prayerful agreement, humble means, and a readiness to obey. The gospel is worth going, giving, and enduring for—because Christ is worthy of the nations.
