A Shepherd Raised from Among His Own

Election of Meliktu Welde Mariam (April 27, 1946)

On April 27, 1946, the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia unanimously elected Meliktu Welde Mariam to the office of bishop. In a church life often tested by regional pressures and political uncertainty, the unanimity itself stood out as a rare public harmony. Many remembered this moment as a quiet mercy: God strengthening His people not by importing hope from afar, but by raising a faithful shepherd from within the flock. His election also highlighted a Christian ideal of shared discernment—leaders recognized not merely for ability, but for character, prayer, and perseverance.

Patriarch Tewoflos and a Historic Turning (1971)

In 1971, Meliktu Welde Mariam became Patriarch Tewoflos. His patriarchate marked a historic change: he was the first Ethiopian patriarch ordained in Ethiopia, bringing to an end the long-standing practice of receiving patriarchs ordained in Egypt. For Ethiopian believers, this was more than administrative reform. It signaled maturity, responsibility, and a renewed sense that the church in Ethiopia could shepherd her own life under God’s hand while remaining firmly tied to the apostolic faith. It also carried a lesson for the wider Christian world: spiritual rootedness and local faithfulness can coexist with historic continuity.

“Have I not commanded you: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

Persecution, Courage, and Martyr Witness

Patriarch Tewoflos is remembered for steady courage under severe persecution. Rather than treating suffering as proof of defeat, he bore hardship as a testimony that Christ remains worthy when obedience is costly. His endurance strengthened many who faced intimidation, loss, or fear, reminding them that faithful leadership is often proved not in ease but in trial. Widely regarded as a martyr, he modeled steadfast devotion to Christ—holding fast to truth, refusing to abandon the flock, and entrusting his life to God’s final judgment.

“Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)
