Bible League: Living His Word
"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

From the Christian perspective, Jesus is speaking truth in this passage about those who abide, or do not abide in Him. He is the Christ, the anointed Messiah of God. If, therefore, you want to bear much fruit, then you must abide in Him and Him in you. Short of that and you can do nothing in life.

John 15 contains the seventh of the seven "I am" statements of Jesus in the gospel of John. In these statements Jesus makes known who He is and what happens when we come to believe in Him. In this particular one, Jesus claims that He is the "true vine" (John 15:1) and what happens when we accept this is that we will bear much fruit.

The metaphor is vine, branches, and fruit, but the reality is Christ, Christians, and Christ-like accomplishments. If the branches abide in the vine they will bear fruit, so likewise the Christian who abides in Christ will act like a Christian. There will come forth everything that we expect from Christians: the fruit and gifts of the Spirit, Christ-like behavior, and Christian endeavors of every kind.

Those who do not abide in the vine, or never were in the vine, believe they can do whatever they think is right and it will actually be something, it will actually be meaningful, it will actually be fruitful. Although what they accomplish may seem high and mighty from the world's perspective, from Jesus' perspective it is nothing at all. Just as they themselves are destined to be "thrown into the fire, and burned," so likewise their accomplishments are destined to be burned up in the fire (I Corinthians 3:15).

If we want accomplishments in life that will last, that will make it through the fire, then abiding in Christ is the key.

Tyndale Life Application Daily Devotion
But I trust in your unfailing love.
I will rejoice because you have rescued me.
I will sing to the LORD
because he is good to me.
Insight
David was faithful to God and trusted wholeheartedly in him, but he felt the pressure of his problems as much as anyone. Instead of giving up or giving in, however, David held on to his faith.
Challenge
In times of despair, it is much harder to hold on than to give up. But if you give up on God, you give in to a life of despair.
Morning and Evening by Spurgeon
Luke 11:4  Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil [or, the evil one].

What we are taught to seek or shun in prayer, we should equally pursue or avoid in action. Very earnestly, therefore, should we avoid temptation, seeking to walk so guardedly in the path of obedience, that we may never tempt the devil to tempt us. We are not to enter the thicket in search of the lion. Dearly might we pay for such presumption. This lion may cross our path or leap upon us from the thicket, but we have nothing to do with hunting him. He that meeteth with him, even though he winneth the day, will find it a stern struggle. Let the Christian pray that he may be spared the encounter. Our Saviour, who had experience of what temptation meant, thus earnestly admonished his disciples--"Pray that ye enter not into temptation."

But let us do as we will, we shall be tempted; hence the prayer "deliver us from evil." God had one Son without sin; but he has no son without temptation. The natural man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upwards, and the Christian man is born to temptation just as certainly. We must be always on our watch against Satan, because, like a thief, he gives no intimation of his approach. Believers who have had experience of the ways of Satan, know that there are certain seasons when he will most probably make an attack, just as at certain seasons bleak winds may be expected; thus the Christian is put on a double guard by fear of danger, and the danger is averted by preparing to meet it. Prevention is better than cure: it is better to be so well armed that the devil will not attack you, than to endure the perils of the fight, even though you come off a conqueror. Pray this evening first that you may not be tempted, and next that if temptation be permitted, you may be delivered from the evil one.
