Through the Bible Day by Day And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him: PHARAOH STILL REFUSES TO SUBMIT Exo_10:1-11 Pharaoh was capable of being a noble and glorious soul, through which God might have shown forth all His power and glory, Exo_9:16. But he refused, and the profanation of the best made him the worst. There is a crisis in every soul-history up to which God’s methods appear likely to turn the proud to Himself; but if that is passed, those methods seem only to harden. Just as in winter the thaw of the noon makes harder ice during the night; so, if the love of God fails to soften, it hardens. In this sense God seemed to harden Pharaoh’s heart. The real conflict lay with his stubborn will, which would not yield, Exo_10:3; although his servants advised him to let the people go, Exo_10:7. The only result was that the king recalled the Hebrew leaders and made another effort at compromise-“Go now ye that are men.” The children are always the key to the situation. And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left. THE PLAGUES OF LOCUSTS AND OF DARKNESS Exo_10:12-29 The locust is the most terrible plague of Eastern lands. The heat intense; the air languid; the sound as of a strong breeze; the sun darkened by a cloud of living things, which cover the earth several inches thick and devour every green thing, Exo_10:15. Notice the extorted confession, at last, of sin, Exo_10:16. Many hearts and lives are devastated by these locust-cares, which eat up all the blades of promise and darken heaven. At the first trace of genuine repentance, however, they are borne away. The Hebrew word for darkness is the same that is used in Gen_1:2. The sun was one of the chief deities of Egypt, hence the horror that paralyzed her population, Exo_10:23. But there was light in Goshen. See Psa_112:4 and Joh_8:12. Pharaoh proposed one last compromise. See Exo_10:24. Moses made a grand answer. The whole universe shall share in our redemption, Rom_8:20-21. Jesus will be content with nothing less than all the purchased possession. Through the Bible Day by Day by F.B. Meyer Text Courtesy of BibleSupport.com. Used by Permission. Bible Hub |
