And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thank have you? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

(34) If ye lend to them . . .—This special illustration of the law of unselfish kindness is in this collocation peculiar to St. Luke; but it is implied in the precept of Matthew 5:42.

To receive as much again.—It is noticeable, as implying that the precepts were given in the first instance to Jewish hearers, that receiving interest on the loan is not contemplated at all. (See Note on Matthew 5:42.)

6:27-36 These are hard lessons to flesh and blood. But if we are thoroughly grounded in the faith of Christ's love, this will make his commands easy to us. Every one that comes to him for washing in his blood, and knows the greatness of the mercy and the love there is in him, can say, in truth and sincerity, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? what thank have ye? and yet they looked upon this, in the first instance of it, as a very great kindness, and act of goodness, as appears from the above citation:

for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again; or "what is equal", and answerable to what they have lent them; that is, the same, or what is equivalent to it.

And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
Luke 6:34. This example is robbed of its point if it be supposed that Lk. had an ascetic bias. If a man despise money there is no merit in lending without expecting repayment.34. to receive as much again] From this we see that ‘interest’ and ‘usury’ are not here contemplated at all.Lend (δανείζετε)

Sinners (οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ)

The article marks them as a class. So, often in New Testament, as when classed with publicans.


Not φιλοῦσι, which implies an instinctive, affectionate attachment, but ἀγαπῶσιν, of a sentiment based on judgment and calculation, which selects its object for a reason. See further, on John 21:15-17. Tynd., the very sinners love their lovers.
