EXPOSITORY (ENGLISH BIBLE)
21:9-42 By mixing the Levites with the other tribes, they were made to see that the eyes of all Israel were upon them, and therefore it was their concern to walk so that their ministry might not be blamed. Every tribe had its share of Levites' cities. Thus did God graciously provide for keeping up religion among them, and that they might have the word in all parts of the land. Yet, blessed be God, we have the gospel more diffused amongst us.Merarite cities. Some of these places are not found in the list of Zebulonite cities in Joshua 19:10-16. The text is considered corrupt. Jos 21:9-42. The Cities of the Priests.

9-40. they gave … these cities which are here mentioned by name—It was overruled by the unerring providence of the Divine Lawgiver that the cities of the priests lay within the territories of Judah and Benjamin. This was a provision, the admirable wisdom and propriety of which were fully manifested on the schism that took place in the reign of Rehoboam.

No text from Poole on this verse.

And unto the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites,.... The descendants of the youngest son of Levi, who were all that remained of the Levites unprovided of cities:

out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs; which lay near Carmel, and was a royal city; See Gill on Joshua 12:22,

and Kartah with her suburbs; perhaps the same with Kattath, Joshua 19:15.

And unto the families of the children of Merari, the {l} rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs, and Kartah with her suburbs,

(l) They are here called the rest, because they are last numbered, and Merari was the younger brother, Ge 46:11.

EXEGETICAL (ORIGINAL LANGUAGES)
34–42. The Cities of the Merarites

34. And unto the families of the children of Merari] were assigned twelve cities, viz.,

(a)  Four in Zebulun,

(b)  Four in Reuben,

(c)  Four in Gad.

Jokneam] See Joshua 19:11; Kartah and Dimnah unknown.

Joshua 21:34The Merarites received twelve towns. From the tribe of Zebulun they received four: Jokneam (Joshua 19:11 : see at Joshua 12:22), Kartah and Dimnah,

(Note: Many commentators identify Dimnah with Rimmono in 1 Chronicles 6:77, but without sufficient reason; for the next of the Chronicles is no doubt corrupt in this passage, as it has only two names, Rimmono and Tabor, instead of four.)

which are not mentioned among the towns of Zebulun in Joshua 19:11., and are unknown, and Nahalal (Joshua 19:15).
