(3) And they sent and called him.—To the assembly. (Comp. 1Kings 12:20.)

All Israel.—Chron. omits assembly of. “Came,” singular; Kings, plural.

10:1-19 The ten tribes revolt from Rehoboam. - Moderate counsels are wisest and best. Gentleness will do what violence will not do. Most people like to be accosted mildly. Good words cost only a little self-denial, yet they purchase great things. No more needs to be done to ruin men, than to leave them to their own pride and passion. Thus, whatever are the devices of men, God is doing his own work by all, and fulfilling the word which he has spoken. No man can bequeath his prosperity to his heirs any more than his wisdom; though our children will generally be affected by our conduct, whether good or bad. Let us then seek those good things which will be our own for ever; and crave the blessing of God upon our posterity, in preference to wealth or worldly exaltation. The narrative of Kings (marginal reference) is repeated with only slight verbal differences. 3. And they sent—rather, "for they had sent," &c. This is stated as the reason of Jeroboam's return from Egypt. And they sent; or, for (as that particle is oft used, as hath been noted before) they had sent, &c. So this is the reason why he returned, as was said, 2 Chronicles 10:2. See Chapter Introduction And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,
2 Chronicles 9:25 does not correspond to the passage 1 Kings 10:26, but in contents and language agrees with 1 Kings 5:6, and 2 Chronicles 9:26 with 1 Kings 5:1. Only the general estimate of Solomon's riches in gold and silver, in 2 Chronicles 9:27, repeated from 2 Chronicles 1:15, corresponds to 1 Kings 10:27. Finally, in 2 Chronicles 9:28 the whole description is rounded off; all that has already been said in 2 Chronicles 1:16, 2 Chronicles 1:17 as to the trade in horses with Egypt (1 Kings 10:28-29) being drawn together into one general statement.
