EXPOSITORY (ENGLISH BIBLE)
1 Chronicles 1:36. And Timna — There is another Timna, the concubine of Eliphaz, Genesis 36:12; but this was one of his sons, though called by the same name; there being some names common both to men and women in the Hebrew and in other languages.28-54 The genealogy is from hence confined to the posterity of Abraham. Let us take occasion from reading these lists of names, to think of the multitudes that have gone through this world, have done their parts in it, and then quitted it. As one generation, even of sinful men, passes away, another comes. Ec 1:4; Nu 32:14, and will do so while the earth remains. Short is our passage through time into eternity. May we be distinguished as the Lord's people.Timna - In Genesis 36:11, Eliphaz has no son Timna; but he has a concubine of the name, who is the mother of Amalek, and conjectured to be Lotan's sister 1 Chronicles 1:39. The best explanation is, that the writer has in his mind rather the tribes descended from Eliphaz than his actual children, and as there was a place, Timna, inhabited by his "dukes" (1 Chronicles 1:51; compare Genesis 35:40), he puts the race which lived there among his "sons." 36. sons of Eliphaz—the tribe Adites, in the center country of the Saracens, so called from his mother, Adah (Ge 36:10).

Teman—gave rise to the land of Teman, near the head of the Red Sea.

Omar—the tribe Beni-Amma, settled at the northern point of Djebel Shera (Mount Seir).

Zephi—the tribe Dzaf.

Gatam—Katam, inhabited by the tribe Al Saruat, or "people of Sarah."

Kenaz—the tribe Aenezes, a tribe whose settlement lies in the neighborhood of Syria.

Amalek—the Beni Malak of Zohran, and the Beni Maledj of the Shat el Arab.

Timna: there is another Timna, the concubine of Eliphaz, Genesis 36:12, but this was one of his sons, though called by the same name; there being some names common both to men and women in the Hebrew and in other languages. The sons of Esau,.... The firstborn of Isaac; his posterity are named in this and the two following verses, as in Genesis 36:1 only it should be observed, that Timna, 1 Chronicles 1:36 is not the name of a man, but was the concubine of Eliphaz, the eldest son of Esau, and the mother of Amalek, Genesis 36:12, and so in the Arabic version it is read,"and Timna, which was the concubine of Eliphaz, the son of Esau, bare him Amalek;''and so the Alexandrian copy of the Septuagint. The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and {k} Timna, and Amalek.

(k) Which was Eliphaz's concubine, read Ge 36:12.

EXEGETICAL (ORIGINAL LANGUAGES)
36. Teman] Amos 1:11-12; Habakkuk 3:3. The word means South, and is applied in the first passage to Edom itself, in the second to the wilderness of Edom, both being south of Canaan.

Zephi] In Genesis 36:11, “Zepho.”

Kenaz] perhaps the same person as the father of Othniel (1 Chronicles 4:13).

Amalek] Perhaps the eponymous ancestor of the Amalekites; cp. 1 Chronicles 1:12 of Genesis 36 with 1 Chronicles 1:16.The names of the generations (תּולדות) of Ishmael (Hebr. Yishma'el) correspond to those in Genesis 25:12-15, and have been there explained. In 1 Chronicles 1:32. also, the names of the thirteen descendants of Abraham by Keturah, six sons and seven grandsons, agree with Genesis 25:1-4 (see commentary on that passage); only the tribes mentioned in Genesis 25:3, which were descended from Dedan the grandson of Keturah, are omitted. From this Bertheau wrongly concludes that the chronicler probably did not find these names in his copy of the Pentateuch. The reason of the omission is rather this, that in Genesis the great-grandchildren are not themselves mentioned, but only the tribes descended from the grandchildren, while the chronicler wished to enumerate only the sons and grandsons. Keturah is called פּילגשׁ after Genesis 25:6, where Keturah and Hagar are so named.
