1 Maccabees 14:36
Good News Translation
"Under his leadership the Gentiles were driven out of the land. Enemy soldiers were forced out of the area north of the Temple, where they had built the fort, from which the soldiers used to go out and defile the holy Temple.

New Revised Standard Version
In his days things prospered in his hands, so that the Gentiles were put out of the country, as were also those in the city of David in Jerusalem, who had built themselves a citadel from which they used to sally forth and defile the environs of the sanctuary, doing great damage to its purity.

Contemporary English Version
"The Gentiles had built a fortress in Jerusalem and had stationed some soldiers there, who then attacked the rest of us and made the temple and everything else unclean. But Simon successfully forced the Gentiles out of Judea; he got rid of the troops in the fortress and was in full control of everything.

New American Bible
“ ‘In his time and under his guidance they succeeded in driving the Gentiles out of their country and those in the City of David in Jerusalem, who had built for themselves a citadel from which they used to sally forth to defile the environs of the sanctuary and inflict grave injury on its purity.
