Zelophehad’s Daughters Marry
(Numbers 27:1–11)

1And the chief fathers of the clans of the sons of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, of the clans of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before the face of Moses and before the face of the leaders, the chief fathers of the sons of Israel. 2And they said, “YHWH commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance by lot to the sons of Israel, and my lord was commanded by YHWH to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. 3And if they are to one of the sons of the tribes of the sons of Israel for wives, their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and it will be added to the inheritance of the tribe that they marry into. And from the lot of our inheritance it is withdrawn. 4And if it is the Jubilee of the sons of Israel, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe that they marry into, and from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers their inheritance shall be withdrawn.”

5And Moses commanded the sons of Israel according to the word of YHWH, saying, “Rightly the tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks. 6This is the thing that YHWH commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying: Let them be for wives to those good in their eyes, but only within the family of the tribe of their father let them be for wives. 7And the inheritance of the sons of Israel shall not change hands from tribe to tribe, for a man of the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers, the sons of Israel shall cling to. 8And every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the sons of Israel shall be a wife of one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that the sons of Israel will have a possession, a man the inheritance of his fathers. 9And inheritance shall not change hands from one tribe to another tribe, but each of the tribes of the sons of Israel shall keep its inheritance.”

10As YHWH commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did. 11And Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah—the daughters of Zelophehad—were to the sons of their father’s brothers for wives. 12Into the clans of the sons of Manasseh son of Joseph they became married, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

13These are the commandments and the ordinances that YHWH commanded by the hand of Moses unto the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan near Jericho.
