The Rise of Persian Kings

The rise of the Persian kings marks a significant period in biblical history, particularly in relation to the Jewish people and the fulfillment of prophetic events. The Persian Empire, under the leadership of its kings, played a pivotal role in the restoration of the Jewish exiles and the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple.

Cyrus the Great

Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, is one of the most notable Persian kings mentioned in the Bible. His reign began around 559 BC, and he is renowned for his conquest of Babylon in 539 BC. The Bible highlights Cyrus as a divinely appointed instrument for the liberation of the Jewish exiles. In Isaiah 45:1, the Lord refers to Cyrus as His "anointed," saying, "This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His anointed, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him, to disarm kings, to open the doors before him, so that the gates will not be shut."

Cyrus's decree, as recorded in Ezra 1:2-4, allowed the Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple: "This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: 'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah. Whoever among you belongs to His people, may his God be with him, and may he go to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel. He is the God who is in Jerusalem.'"

Darius I

Darius I, also known as Darius the Great, reigned from 522 BC to 486 BC. His rule is significant in the biblical narrative for the continuation of the work on the Second Temple. After a period of opposition and delay, the rebuilding efforts were resumed during his reign. In response to a letter from Tattenai, the governor of the region, Darius issued a decree that not only confirmed Cyrus's original decree but also provided resources for the construction (Ezra 6:1-12). Ezra 6:14-15 records the completion of the Temple: "So the elders of the Jews continued to build and prosper under the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. They finished building according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. And this temple was completed on the third day of the month of Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius."

Xerxes I and Artaxerxes I

Xerxes I, known in the Bible as Ahasuerus, reigned from 486 BC to 465 BC. He is most famously associated with the account of Esther, where he is depicted as the king who chose Esther as queen and thwarted Haman's plot to annihilate the Jews (Esther 1-10).

Artaxerxes I, who reigned from 465 BC to 424 BC, is another Persian king mentioned in the Bible. He is noted for his favorable treatment of the Jewish people, allowing Ezra to return to Jerusalem with a group of exiles and providing support for the religious and social reforms (Ezra 7:11-28). Nehemiah, the cupbearer to Artaxerxes, also received permission and resources from the king to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:1-8).

Prophetic Significance

The rise of the Persian kings is seen as a fulfillment of biblical prophecy, particularly in the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah. The liberation of the Jewish exiles and the rebuilding of the Temple were foretold by the prophets, and the actions of the Persian kings were instrumental in bringing these prophecies to fruition. The Persian period is thus a testament to God's sovereignty and faithfulness in using foreign rulers to accomplish His divine purposes for His people.
