The Mysterious Handwriting refers to the supernatural event recorded in the Book of Daniel, chapter 5, where a disembodied hand writes a cryptic message on the wall during a royal feast hosted by King Belshazzar of Babylon. This event is significant in biblical history as it marks the divine judgment against the Babylonian empire and serves as a powerful reminder of God's sovereignty and justice.

Historical Context

The event takes place during the reign of Belshazzar, who is identified as the son of Nabonidus, the last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Belshazzar is described as a co-regent, ruling in Babylon while his father was away. The feast occurs on the night before the fall of Babylon to the Medes and Persians, around 539 BC. The Babylonian empire, once a symbol of power and grandeur, is on the brink of collapse, fulfilling the prophecies of its downfall as foretold by the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah.

The Feast and the Handwriting

During the feast, Belshazzar, in a display of arrogance and sacrilege, orders the gold and silver vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem to be brought out so that he and his nobles, wives, and concubines might drink from them. As they drink wine and praise the gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, a mysterious hand appears and writes on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace. The king is visibly shaken, and his countenance changes as he witnesses the supernatural occurrence.

The Interpretation by Daniel

Unable to interpret the writing, Belshazzar calls for the wise men of Babylon, offering them rewards and high positions if they can decipher the message. However, none of the king's wise men can interpret the writing. The queen, likely the queen mother, advises Belshazzar to summon Daniel, known for his wisdom and ability to interpret dreams and visions.

Daniel is brought before the king, and after refusing the king's rewards, he proceeds to interpret the writing. Daniel reminds Belshazzar of the fate of his predecessor, Nebuchadnezzar, who was humbled by God for his pride. He rebukes Belshazzar for not humbling himself and for desecrating the sacred vessels from the temple.

The writing on the wall, "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN," is interpreted by Daniel as follows:

· MENE: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
· TEKEL: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
· PARSIN: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

The Fulfillment of the Prophecy

That very night, Belshazzar is slain, and Darius the Mede takes over the kingdom, fulfilling the prophecy of the writing on the wall. The fall of Babylon serves as a testament to the accuracy of biblical prophecy and the ultimate authority of God over the nations.

Theological Significance

The Mysterious Handwriting is a profound demonstration of God's judgment and the consequences of pride and idolatry. It underscores the biblical principle that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). The event also highlights the importance of reverence for the sacred and the dangers of blasphemy. Daniel's role as the interpreter of the divine message reinforces the theme of God's wisdom and guidance provided to those who remain faithful to Him.

Scripture Reference

Daniel 5:25-28 : "Now this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN. This is the interpretation of the message: MENE means that God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. TEKEL means that you have been weighed on the scales and found deficient. PERES means that your kingdom has been divided and given over to the Medes and Persians."
