The Consequence of Living by the Flesh

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of living by the flesh is a recurring theme in the Bible, often contrasted with living by the Spirit. The "flesh" refers to the sinful nature of humanity, characterized by desires and actions that are contrary to God's will. The consequences of living by the flesh are both spiritual and moral, leading to separation from God and a life devoid of true fulfillment.

Biblical Foundation

The Apostle Paul addresses the consequences of living by the flesh extensively in his epistles. In Galatians 5:19-21 , he writes, "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." This passage highlights the moral decay and spiritual death that result from living according to the flesh.

Spiritual Consequences

Living by the flesh results in spiritual death, as it separates individuals from the life-giving presence of God. Romans 8:6 states, "The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace." This separation from God is the ultimate consequence, as it leads to eternal separation from His presence and blessings. The flesh is inherently opposed to God, as Romans 8:7 explains, "The mind of the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so."

Moral and Social Consequences

The moral consequences of living by the flesh are evident in the breakdown of personal and social relationships. The acts of the flesh, such as jealousy, rage, and divisions, lead to conflict and strife within communities and families. These behaviors erode trust and unity, resulting in a fractured society. The pursuit of fleshly desires often leads to addiction, broken relationships, and a loss of purpose.

Contrast with Life in the Spirit

The Bible contrasts living by the flesh with living by the Spirit, which brings life, peace, and fulfillment. Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit as "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." These virtues stand in stark contrast to the destructive behaviors associated with the flesh. Living by the Spirit aligns individuals with God's will, leading to a life of purpose and eternal significance.

Redemption and Transformation

Despite the dire consequences of living by the flesh, the Bible offers hope through redemption and transformation in Christ. Romans 8:1-2 declares, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death." Through faith in Jesus Christ, individuals can overcome the power of the flesh and experience a new life empowered by the Holy Spirit.

In summary, the consequence of living by the flesh is a life marked by spiritual death, moral decay, and social discord. However, through the redemptive work of Christ, believers are called to live by the Spirit, experiencing the fullness of life that God intends.
