Sotai

Sotai is a name mentioned in the context of the post-exilic return to Jerusalem. The name appears in the genealogical records of those who returned from the Babylonian exile with Zerubbabel. In the book of Ezra, Sotai is listed among the descendants of Solomon's servants: "The descendants of Solomon’s servants: the descendants of Sotai, Hassophereth, Peruda" (Ezra 2:55). Similarly, in the book of Nehemiah, the name appears in the same context: "The descendants of Solomon’s servants: the descendants of Sotai, Sophereth, Perida" (Nehemiah 7:57). The mention of Sotai in these lists highlights the continuity of the community and the preservation of identity among the Israelites, even after the Babylonian captivity.

Sophereth

Sophereth, also referred to as Hassophereth in some translations, is another name found in the genealogical records of the returnees from Babylon. Like Sotai, Sophereth is listed among the descendants of Solomon's servants. The presence of Sophereth in these records underscores the importance of maintaining the lineage and heritage of those who served in the royal household. The slight variation in the name between Ezra and Nehemiah (Hassophereth in Ezra 2:55 and Sophereth in Nehemiah 7:57) may reflect differences in transliteration or textual transmission over time. The inclusion of Sophereth in these lists serves as a testament to the meticulous record-keeping and the value placed on heritage and service in the post-exilic community.

Perida

Perida, also known as Peruda in some translations, is the third name in the list of Solomon's servants' descendants who returned from exile. The name appears alongside Sotai and Sophereth in both Ezra and Nehemiah: "The descendants of Solomon’s servants: the descendants of Sotai, Hassophereth, Peruda" (Ezra 2:55) and "The descendants of Solomon’s servants: the descendants of Sotai, Sophereth, Perida" (Nehemiah 7:57). The variation in the name between the two books (Peruda in Ezra and Perida in Nehemiah) is another example of the minor differences that can occur in ancient texts. The mention of Perida highlights the role of Solomon's servants and their descendants in the restoration of Jerusalem and the reestablishment of the Jewish community after the exile. These records emphasize the continuity of service and the preservation of the community's identity through successive generations.
