Seeking the Giver, Not Just the Gifts
Jump to: SubtopicsTerms

In the Christian faith, the concept of seeking the Giver rather than merely the gifts is a profound spiritual principle that emphasizes the importance of prioritizing a relationship with God over the pursuit of His blessings. This principle is deeply rooted in Scripture and reflects a heart posture that values the Giver—God Himself—above the material or spiritual gifts He bestows.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible consistently teaches that God desires a relationship with His people that is based on love, trust, and devotion rather than a transactional approach focused solely on receiving blessings. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus instructs His followers, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you." This verse underscores the priority of seeking God's kingdom and righteousness above all else, with the assurance that God will provide for our needs.

In the Old Testament, the account of Job exemplifies this principle. Despite losing his wealth, health, and family, Job remains steadfast in his faith, declaring, "Though He slay me, I will hope in Him" (Job 13:15). Job's unwavering trust in God, even in the absence of blessings, highlights the importance of valuing the Giver above the gifts.

Heart Posture and Worship

The call to seek the Giver is also a call to genuine worship. In John 4:23-24, Jesus tells the Samaritan woman, "But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth." True worship is characterized by a sincere heart that seeks God Himself, not merely what He can provide.

The Psalms frequently express a longing for God that transcends material blessings. Psalm 42:1-2 states, "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?" This imagery conveys a deep yearning for God's presence, illustrating the psalmist's desire for the Giver above all else.

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament further reinforces this principle through the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. In the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), the younger son's initial desire for his father's wealth leads to his downfall. It is only when he returns to his father, seeking reconciliation rather than material gain, that he finds true restoration. This parable illustrates the transformative power of seeking a relationship with the Giver.

The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, expresses a similar sentiment. He writes, "But whatever was gain to me I count as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:7-8). Paul's words reflect a heart that treasures the knowledge of Christ above all earthly achievements and possessions.

Practical Implications

For believers, seeking the Giver rather than the gifts involves cultivating a personal relationship with God through prayer, worship, and the study of Scripture. It requires a shift in focus from what God can do for us to who He is. This approach fosters spiritual maturity and aligns the believer's desires with God's will.

In prayer, Jesus encourages His followers to approach God as a loving Father who knows their needs. In Matthew 7:11 , He says, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!" This assurance invites believers to trust in God's goodness and seek His presence above all else.

Ultimately, the call to seek the Giver is a call to a deeper, more intimate relationship with God, where the believer's greatest joy and fulfillment are found in Him alone.
