Introduction

Biblical Context

In the antediluvian period, humanity had become exceedingly wicked, prompting God to express regret for creating mankind. Genesis 6:5-6 states, "Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time. And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him in His heart." Amidst this moral decay, Noah is introduced as a beacon of righteousness. Genesis 6:9 describes him as "a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God."

Divine Command and Noah's Response

God's decision to cleanse the earth through a great flood is revealed to Noah, along with specific instructions to build an ark. Genesis 6:14-16 details the construction of the ark: "Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark and coat it with pitch inside and out. And this is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high. You are to make a roof for the ark, finish its walls to within a cubit of the top, and put a door in the side of the ark. You are to make it with lower, middle, and upper decks."

Noah's obedience is underscored by his meticulous adherence to God's instructions. Genesis 6:22 affirms, "So Noah did everything precisely as God had commanded him." This obedience is further emphasized in Genesis 7:5 , "And Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him."

The Flood and Preservation

Noah's obedience culminates in the preservation of his family and the animal species. As the floodwaters rise, Noah, his family, and the animals enter the ark, as commanded by God. Genesis 7:7 records, "And Noah and his wife, his sons and their wives, entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood."

The narrative continues with the flood covering the earth, but Noah's obedience ensures the survival of life. Genesis 8:1 states, "But God remembered Noah and all the animals and livestock that were with him in the ark, and He sent a wind over the earth, and the waters began to subside."

Covenant and Legacy

Following the flood, Noah's obedience is rewarded with a covenant from God. Genesis 9:9-11 declares, "Behold, I now establish My covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth—every living thing that came out of the ark. I establish My covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth."
