Living with Expectancy

Topical Encyclopedia
Living with expectancy is a biblical principle that encourages believers to anticipate God's promises and work in their lives with hope and faith. This concept is deeply rooted in Scripture, where followers of God are often called to live with a forward-looking perspective, trusting in His faithfulness and divine timing.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible is replete with examples and teachings that underscore the importance of living with expectancy. One of the most prominent themes is the anticipation of God's promises. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as "the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see." This verse highlights the essence of expectancy—believing in the unseen and trusting in God's promises.

Old Testament Examples

In the Old Testament, the patriarch Abraham exemplifies living with expectancy. God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations, despite his old age and Sarah's barrenness. Genesis 15:5 recounts God's promise: "Look now at the heavens and count the stars, if you are able. Then He told him, 'So shall your offspring be.'" Abraham's faith and expectancy in God's promise were credited to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).

The Israelites, during their exodus from Egypt, were also called to live with expectancy. Despite the challenges and uncertainties in the wilderness, they were to trust in God's promise of a land flowing with milk and honey (Exodus 3:17). Their journey was a test of faith and expectancy in God's provision and guidance.

New Testament Teachings

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ's teachings often encouraged His followers to live with expectancy regarding the Kingdom of God. In Matthew 6:33 , Jesus instructs, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you." This directive calls believers to prioritize God's kingdom with the expectation that their needs will be met.

The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-13 further illustrates the importance of living with expectancy. The wise virgins, who were prepared and expectant of the bridegroom's arrival, were rewarded, while the foolish ones were left out. This parable serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and expectant of Christ's return.

Apostolic Encouragement

The apostles also emphasized living with expectancy. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans, speaks of the hope and expectancy of creation for the revelation of the children of God. Romans 8:19 states, "The creation waits in eager expectation for the revelation of the sons of God." This expectancy is not passive but active, urging believers to live in a manner worthy of their calling.

In his epistle, James encourages believers to be patient and expectant, using the analogy of a farmer waiting for the precious fruit of the earth. James 5:7 advises, "Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient for it until it receives the early and late rains."

Practical Application

Living with expectancy involves a daily commitment to trust in God's promises and His timing. It requires believers to cultivate a heart of faith, patience, and readiness. This expectancy is not merely wishful thinking but is grounded in the assurance of God's character and His Word. Believers are encouraged to engage in prayer, study of Scripture, and active service, all while maintaining a hopeful anticipation of God's work in their lives and the world.
