Marriage in the Bible

Marriage is a sacred institution established by God, as seen in the creation narrative. In Genesis 2:24 , it is written, "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." This verse underscores the divine intention for marriage to be a union between a man and a woman, characterized by unity and permanence.

The New Testament further affirms the sanctity of marriage. In Ephesians 5:31-33 , the Apostle Paul echoes Genesis, stating, "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." Celibacy in the Bible

Jesus Himself speaks of celibacy in Matthew 19:12 , saying, "For there are eunuchs who were born that way, others were made that way by men, and still others live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it."

The Apostle Paul provides further guidance on celibacy in 1 Corinthians 7. He acknowledges the benefits of remaining single, especially in terms of undivided devotion to the Lord. In 1 Corinthians 7:7-8 , Paul states, "I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and the widows I say this: It is good for them to remain unmarried, as I am."

Paul also addresses the practical considerations of celibacy, recognizing that it is not a command but a calling. In 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 , he explains that unmarried individuals can focus on pleasing the Lord without the distractions of marital responsibilities.

Balancing Marriage and Celibacy

The Bible provides guidance for both marriage and celibacy, recognizing that each has its own place and purpose within the Christian life. In 1 Corinthians 7:17 , Paul advises, "Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him." This suggests that both marriage and celibacy are callings from God, and individuals should seek His guidance in discerning their path.

Ultimately, whether one chooses marriage or celibacy, the Bible emphasizes living a life that honors God and fulfills His purposes. Both states are seen as gifts from God, and believers are encouraged to embrace their calling with gratitude and faithfulness.
