Sovereignty of God

The sovereignty of God is a fundamental concept in Christian theology, referring to God's supreme power and authority over all creation. This doctrine asserts that God is the ultimate ruler, possessing the ability to govern the universe according to His will and purpose. The Bible consistently affirms God's sovereignty, emphasizing His control over the natural world, human history, and individual lives.

In the Old Testament, God's sovereignty is evident in His creation and sustenance of the world. Genesis 1:1 declares, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." This foundational statement establishes God as the Creator, who brought everything into existence by His command. Psalm 115:3 further underscores this truth: "Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases."

The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession, above all peoples on the face of the earth. The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples." This passage highlights God's sovereign choice of Israel, not based on their merit, but on His love and promise.

In the New Testament, the theme of divine election is further developed. Ephesians 1:4-5 declares, "For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His presence. In love He predestined us for adoption as His sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will." This passage emphasizes that God's choice is rooted in His eternal plan and love, resulting in the adoption of believers as His children.

Romans 9:15-16 also addresses the concept of God's choice: "For He says to Moses: 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.' As Romans 11:33-36 exclaims, "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments, and untraceable His ways! 'Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?' 'Who has first given to God, that God should repay him?' For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen."
