Divine Appointment

The concept of divine appointment refers to the belief that God orchestrates events and circumstances in the lives of individuals and nations according to His will and purpose. This theological principle is rooted in the understanding that God is actively involved in His creation, guiding and directing the course of history to fulfill His divine plan.

Scripture provides numerous examples of divine appointments. One notable instance is the account of Esther, who was placed in a position of influence as queen "for such a time as this" (Esther 4:14). Her role in saving the Jewish people from destruction highlights the idea that God positions individuals strategically to accomplish His purposes.

Another example is the calling of the prophet Jeremiah. God tells Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as a prophet to the nations" (Jeremiah 1:5). This passage underscores the belief that God has specific plans and purposes for individuals even before their birth.

The New Testament also reflects the theme of divine appointment. In Acts 13:2, the Holy Spirit instructs the early church to "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them" . This divine directive illustrates how God appoints individuals for specific tasks within His kingdom.

Sovereignty

The sovereignty of God is a foundational doctrine that asserts God's supreme authority and power over all creation. It encompasses His ability to govern the universe and execute His will without limitation or opposition. God's sovereignty is a central theme throughout the Bible, affirming His control over both the natural and spiritual realms.

In the Old Testament, God's sovereignty is evident in His creation and sustenance of the world. Psalm 115:3 declares, "Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases" . This verse emphasizes God's freedom to act according to His own will, independent of human influence or constraint.

The book of Daniel provides a vivid portrayal of God's sovereignty over earthly kingdoms. In Daniel 4:35, it is proclaimed, "All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, 'What have You done?'" . This passage highlights God's ultimate authority over human affairs and His ability to direct the course of history.

In the New Testament, the sovereignty of God is further affirmed through the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:16-17 states, "For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together" . This passage underscores Christ's preeminence and His sustaining power over all creation.

The doctrine of divine sovereignty assures believers of God's control and purpose in all circumstances. Romans 8:28 provides comfort and assurance, stating, "And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose" . This verse encapsulates the belief that God's sovereign will ultimately leads to the fulfillment of His good and perfect plan for His people.
