Topical Encyclopedia
The term "destroying angels" refers to angelic beings in the Bible who are tasked with executing God's judgment and wrath upon individuals, cities, or nations. These angels are often depicted as agents of divine retribution, carrying out the will of God with precision and authority. Their actions serve as a reminder of God's holiness and justice, as well as His sovereignty over creation.

Biblical Instances

1. The Passover in Egypt: One of the most notable instances of a destroying angel is found in the account of the Passover in Exodus. God sends a destroying angel to strike down the firstborn of Egypt as a judgment against Pharaoh and the gods of Egypt. The Israelites are instructed to mark their doorposts with the blood of a lamb so that the angel would "pass over" their homes. Exodus 12:23 states, "For the LORD will pass through to strike down the Egyptians, and when He sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, the LORD will pass over that doorway and will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down."

2. The Plague on Israel: In 2 Samuel 24, King David sins by taking a census of Israel, leading to God's displeasure. As a result, God sends a plague upon Israel, executed by a destroying angel. 2 Samuel 24:16 describes, "But when the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, 'Enough! Withdraw your hand now!' The angel of the LORD was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."

3. The Assyrian Army: In 2 Kings 19 and Isaiah 37, the Assyrian army, led by King Sennacherib, threatens Jerusalem. In response to King Hezekiah's prayer, God sends an angel to destroy 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night, delivering Jerusalem from imminent destruction. 2 Kings 19:35 records, "That night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!"

Theological Significance

Destroying angels serve as instruments of God's judgment, emphasizing His righteousness and the seriousness of sin. Their actions underscore the reality that God is not only a God of love and mercy but also a God of justice who will not leave the guilty unpunished. The presence of destroying angels in Scripture highlights the need for repentance and obedience to God's commands.

Symbolism and Interpretation

In a broader sense, destroying angels symbolize the inevitable consequences of sin and rebellion against God. They remind believers of the spiritual warfare that exists and the ultimate victory of God's kingdom over evil. The accounts of destroying angels also point to the protective power of God over His people, as seen in the Passover and the deliverance of Jerusalem.

Conclusion

While the concept of destroying angels may evoke fear, it also serves as a powerful testament to God's control over history and His commitment to justice. These angelic beings are a part of the divine order, executing God's will and ensuring that His purposes are fulfilled on earth.
